The Ides of March

George Clooney signs with “The Ides Of March” good – not great – film policy, intelligent and exciting, the corridors of power. A fiction that has, of course, nothing to do with reality…

This is the leadership race of the U.S. Democratic Party. Stephen (Ryan Gosling) is working for a candidate (George Clooney) who has all the qualities to save the country. He will quickly learn that integrity is a vague concept and should be wary of both of his opponents (Paul Giamatti) and his colleagues (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood) and members of the Press (Marisa Tomei).

What’s good to see George Clooney return to the director works more politicized after the harmless “Leatherheads”. Without reaching the grace of the beautiful “Good Night, and Good Luck”, “The Ides of March” is a feature film written brilliantly, captivating in its games that look like real games of chess.

The dialogues are pests in the environment where the betrayals, disappointments and stabbed in the back are numerous. Dipping merrily in the news while drawing inspiration from American’s greatest figures (Clinton, Obama), the scenario is based on a play is fascinating without being too complex, making easy-to-date many moral dilemmas ubiquitous in these sets of slides.

The story that starts in strength, however, eventually runs out before the end. Not at all credible, the character of the student played by the unconvincing Evan Rachel Wood is becoming increasingly important. A little grain in some gear that sabotages the company, revealing the open characters that are more superficial and what they do seem obvious lack of ambition. How to explain the radical change of position of the hero if not a dramatic flaw? An action that makes perhaps the test most exciting, but leaves traces in terms of credibility.

A false step, rather major, that does not have for as much to overshadow this production more competent and more satisfactory. Clooney signs staged relentless, sophisticated and without showing off, which impresses with the quality of its plans, being aided by the delicate musical score by Alexandre Desplat. The desired effect – like an old American classic of the 1950s – is fully achieved. The actor also knows well surrounded and offers great roles for performers shine.

Around solid Ryan Gosling to cherish this year 2011 (with “Drive” and “Stupid Crazy Love”) are old hands who still face in employment, of which the most interesting are the unpredictable Paul Giamatti and the sensitive Philip Seymour Hoffman.

More effective than subtle, stunning entertaining as “The Ides of March” ineptitude to register among the great political films of Hollywood – along with the original version of “All the King’s Men”, for example. The rendezvous with history can wait, because waiting for the effort opens at the right time, at a time when cynicism is becoming more common in man and woman in the world. And nothing says it will not continue for some time.
