Priest
The team behind the disappointing “Legion” is back in “Priest”, an apocalyptic feature film fails miserably to entertain the slightest. Multiply the clashes – in three dimensions at that – certainly not the best way to forget a story as mediocre. What do want to see “Thor” or even “Fast Five” for the umpteenth time.
In a world where the humans and the vampires delivered themselves until all recently a fight without thank you, a very special priest (Paul Bettany) decides to rescue his niece (Lily Collins) who has been kidnapped by evil beings. On his way, he finds allies who will help him in his perilous mission.
Not to be confused with the excellent “Priest” Antonia Bird has done in 1994, recycled version of 2011 … 2010! Building on the popular success of the boring “Legion”, director Scott Charles Stewart and actor Paul Bettany have decided to re-team for a similar production: everything is broken in the spectacular but empty and nothing is in the scenario.
A proven recipe that does not rhyme nevertheless with the moment of the year: this is not “Thor” that took the poster last week while recalling that it is completely possible to be both effective and intelligent?
Incidentally, this variation on familiar themes can plagiarize a few titles from last year: the most exciting “Daybreakers” the eternal capital of vampires and the more stylized “The Book of Eli” in this vision of end of the world.
It nevertheless would have been so simple to avoid the disaster. By using such charismatic actors. But neither jaded nor his co-stars Paul Bettany are equipped to turn things around. It is so much sadder of there to rediscover the too rare Christopher Plummer that does the extras, while the Karl Urban embodies one of the mean the most laughable seen lately at the cinema.
“Priest” would be the “Blade” for the new generation. It arrives nevertheless only to be a reproduction of poor quality, imitation Series B gesturing toward western that can be saved by its confrontations that are revolutionizing absolutely nothing. When acting, directing and three-dimensional effects are disappointing is that there is a serious problem. And then we wonder why everything has not been presented to the press …
