Hall Pass

After a decade out of fuel, the Farrelly brothers find themselves still overwhelmed by events. Although it contains some passages comic, “Hall Pass” never really reaches its cruising speed. What could be so funny is ultimately far too wise and peaceful.

Life after so many years of marriage may seem long and monotonous. Especially for friends Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) who think only of sex. Exasperated, their wives give them the opportunity to look elsewhere for a week.

The Farrelly Brothers are Alexandre Daigle of American cinema. After the first three movies quite funny when they amused themselves by pushing the boundaries of good taste (the peak being reached with the enjoyable “Kingpin”), the rest of their career has never been to the hopes and expectations, accumulating failures and warm production. Now they bite the dust again for their umpteenth return.

Difficult not to recognize the Paw Judd Apatow in this way to treat male friendship. The duo Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis is just the best part of the story, their obvious complicity appearing on the screen. Too bad they are surrounded by evil. There is nobody in the secondary distribution that is capable of pulling the game well, what has always been the strength of the brothers (“There’s Something About Mary” for example).

All in all, there must be only five scenes that make you laugh, which is better during the end credits. The rest of the scatter plot at the speed of light, with proposals just mentioned lip and gags missed because too soft, ordinary and repetitive. In 2011, that will still laugh at male gender who are placed in unusual places? What will review its French cousin, “Do me a favor” by Emmanuel Mouret, who instantly put in a good mood.

History is also not up to his subject. Instead of going to the bottom of things, the creators of “Dumb and Dumber” only scratched the surface. Of the great comedy of manners that could be (so “The Decline of the American empire”, but the Farrelly own sauce), they opted for the easy and mindless entertainment. With moral conservative base. So people “infidels” who have passed the act will not be spared by destiny, the opposite of their associates who have resisted the temptation to deceive their spouses.

With its sympathetic performers, good music (the Beach Boys, Spoon and more) about it in gold and some absurd situations, “Hall Pass” had the potential to be one of the great comedies of 2011. Instead it is an uneven and forgettable effort, perfect for Sunday afternoons on TV.
