Gnomeo and Juliet

Umpteenth variation on Shakespeare’s classic, “Gnomeo and Juliet” is watered down and simplified version which is for a very, very young clientele. Except that at that age you want a bit of magic and enchantment: two elements that are crucial flaws.

Two neighbors hate passionately. When they left, their garden gnomes are at war. But when Gnomeo (voiced by James McAvoy and Maxime Leflaguais, depending on the version) puts eyes on Juliet (Emily Blunt and Sophie Cadieux), the lightning flash and mutual. They must convince their respective families, however, that dialogue can exist between their warring clans.

Painful week for the legendary authors. While “From Prada To Nada” massacre “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen, Shakespeare receives a salary almost identical (the result is much less disastrous, but not really convincing either). It is normal to take shortcuts to introduce younger literary masterpieces, but it should not offer them anything either. Yet it is obvious that was not followed by the seven writers in place.

Picking up the storyline of substantially base of the original version (without the violence, dialogue and exquisite prose of the final tragic), the narrative fails in its most basic rule: show charismatic heroes and developed. Not only are the two main characters have no chemistry (both in terms of characters developed as voices used), but it is not uncommon to prefer anything that moves around them, and especially that pink flamingo, the frog and the blue mushroom.

Seeking to recreate a “Toy Story” or “A Bug’s Life” in its way to animate a miniature universe, director Kelly Asbury (who had worked wonders on “Shrek 2″) finds every opportunity to lecture. Worse, his gags lack both comic and impact of breath rhythm to enliven the youth who just wants to be entertained. The oldest are hardly better off with his rare jokes that come to them, arriving by winks a little leaning on “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “American Beauty”.

The feature makes up for the quality of its animation, still very interesting to watch, which is indirectly proportional to the importance of three-dimensional effects that verge on irrelevance. The choices are not really sound pleasant. Since Elton John acts as executive producer, his music became the outlet of the characters. Although he made several excellent pieces in the past, the selection employed is difficult to reconcile with the images, which adds an extra layer and unnecessary sugar and syrup kitsch

“Gnomeo and Juliet” like a parent trap. By far the drawings attracted the attention of toddlers, but once the laughter in the room is real long wait. Like what it is important not to trust appearances, let alone a project where the name was replaced by Romeo Gnomeo.
