Get Low before dying

Robert Duvall delivers an outstanding performance in “Get Low”, a low budget film that was sadly lacking. Without the contribution of its excellent actors, the work could hardly have been screened in cinemas.

In the area of Tennessee in 1930, the name of Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) is not favorable. Man lives as a hermit for 40 years and the people who have not crossed that good words to say about it. Aware that it is the end of his life, The grumpy old decides to organize a party to celebrate his funeral … and almost four truths to the villagers. He can count on the contribution of Frank (Bill Murray), a gravedigger who does not hate money, and the widow Maddie (Sissy Spacek), probably the only woman he ever loved.

Director of photography (including “Kiss the Girl”) and director of the short film “Two Soldiers” (which won an Oscar), Aaron Schneider offers his premiste long essay with “Get Low”, a story of the festival (with its strengths and weaknesses) based on a true story. The trial, deliberately slow and devoid of action, does not staged any break. The pace falters at times, before the plot is slow and some captivating characters could be explored more thoroughly.

Like the superior “Winter’s Bone” by Debra Granik is the audience to make efforts not to surrender their weapons after thirty minutes because they will be rewarded first. For a recreation period spotless finely explores the economic situation of the place. By taking a mixture of drama and comedy to subtle surprise visit. And by issues both fundamental and universal, ranging from redemption to the pursuit of happiness, through an unspoken love and serenity of the soul. What seemed so simple becomes complex at times, like this life that does not scroll properly.

If there is only one reason to see the effort is the magnificence of its distribution. Robert Duvall book another great performance, which may be recalled that in “The Apostle”. The actor looks like an ogre with a heart and it is not surprising he gets nominated for an Oscar. At his side, Sissy Spacek develops a wonderfully role sensitive with a sensitivity all on edge, and Bill Murray never attempts to make people laugh even if his lines are often smiling.

While it is sometimes difficult to love from A to Z, must not forget that “Get Low” is a first film, minor and imperfect, having enough successful scenes hinting at a sunny future for the filmmaker Aaron Schneider. Especially the opportunity to be impressed by a cast of seasoned performers who, like their characters, would like to make one last good shot before it is too late.
