Film Review The Dilemma
Ron Howard tries to comedy sanctimonious and full of excess with “The Dilemma” bogged feet where a Judd Apatow or Todd Phillips has withdrawn something satisfactory. Three giggling and ready, which is clearly too little.
Ronny (Vince Vaughn) is a dilemma. He learned that the woman (Winona Ryder) of her best friend (Kevin James) is cheating on her with a standard tattooed (Channing Tatum) and he hesitated before telling her, for fear that the further stress at work. By keeping this secret with him, it is unlikely that endanger its union with the beautiful Beth (Jennifer Connelly).
No stranger to the Oscars (“Frost / Nixon”) and the summer season which is auspicious in Hollywood blockbusters (the two “Da Vinci Code”), the new film by Ron Howard released in January in almost total anonymity, accompanied a trailer uninspiring. The director likes to explore all genres and does so without ever displaying his own leg, without a style all his own. Yet between drama and action, comedy has always been his Achilles heel (difficult to forget his turnip “EDtv”). There he try – and fall – again on this banana peel.
The story of “The Dilemma” could be very funny. One can easily imagine a Billy Wilder (Woody Allen or even an Yves Pelletier) withdrawing the maximum of this irresistible premise, delivering a multitude of gags while cherishing the moral fiber (yes to the franchise and not the lies) of the scenario.
The creator of “Willow” and “Coccon” is a less preferred front, at any rate a bit, developing a sense of humor that is rarely fly, titillating drama explored superficially, like a sub plot of cars that will totally unnecessary. By dint of turning around the pot without ever entering the spectator despair that the book takes off, which almost never happens.
There are one or two sequences more absurd, more comedy. For once, the filmmaker plunges into the job without asking any questions. This does not give the scenes more subtle, but certainly the most hilarious. This is also where Vince Vaughn seems finally freed from his chains, airs with a palpable mood. But more often than he should return to the fold their tails between their legs, delivering the reply to Kevin James, with as much enthusiasm as a Sidney Crosby who is facing any player of Midget AAA. This desire to be elsewhere is also felt among Winona Ryder finally celebrated her return to the screen with the “Black Swan”, and Jennifer Connelly who should probably be the best actress who matured on screen.
Whether we like it or not the movie by Ron Howard, it must be confessed that he offered in the past few fine songs, including “Apollo 13″ and “A Beautiful Mind”. There is usually always a minimum of quality appointments. He tries desperately needed in this project which is similar to a simple and vulgar order.
