Film Review Paul

Pastiche of the great majority of alien movies of the past 30 years, “Paul” is a delirious comedy promised great things. The trip, funny and irresistible as it is, probably could be even greater if the desire to please everyone is not as pronounced.

Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are two teenagers in the eternal soul who swear by science fiction, comics and video games. Returning a conventum, they met Paul (voice of Seth Rogen), an alien who talks like them and coronation. Their new companion tries to go in them, and the two geeks in power decide to accompany him. Their road will be littered with obstacles, while Zoila special agent (Jason Bateman) will do everything in his power to stop them.

“Paul” is a long-awaited film. It is written and performed by the creators of the hilarious “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead” is directed by the man behind the friendly “Superbad” and “Adventureland” and he has the voice of the very funny Seth Rogen.

A trio of dream does not always fulfill his promises. Not that the effort is not funny. Instead, it is. And even much in the way of multiplying the winks to infinity (almost all titles of its kind since the era Spielberg spend) and compare the ways of seeing the world, especially among the disciples of God and those of Darwin, between the United States and Great Britain. Tolerance and respect for difference are the main messages of the story, which was also the case of “AND”.

We feel however that everything could have gone even further. Respect for the family audience was on everyone’s lips, excessive vulgarity are still very controlled. Worst still are those supported gags and repetitive (how many times will we make mention of the supposed homosexuality between the two heroes?) who barely smile. Although the demonstration is performed correctly and that it can count on a strong team of experienced performers, the story gets bogged down slowly but surely, gradually distorting the charm that appeared during the first half hour.

Halfway between the more successful “Galaxy Quest” and “Spaceballs” and the disappointing “Fanboys” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, “Paul” is a kind of “Mac and Me” that does not take seriously instead of being a humorous during “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. It’s fun and entertaining, but at the same time a little too soft and useless. Ironically, a little more madness, fantasy and letting go could make all the difference.
